Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson
Former Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Iceland
- Born in Ísafjördur, Iceland, 21. February,1939
- Education: Graduate of The Old Grammar School of Reykjavík (1958); M.A. (Econ.) from Edinburgh University (1963); Postgraduate work in Economics at Stockholm University (1963-64) and Harvard (1976-77)
- Married to Bryndís Schram, actress, linguist, writer and TV personality
- Four children and five grandchildren
- Professional carrier: Teacher and journalist (1964-1970); Founder and rector of Ísafjörður College (1970-79); Editor in Chief of a Reykjavík Daily (1979-82); Member of Parliament (Althingi– 1982-98); Leader of The Social-democratic Party – SDP – (1984-96); Minister of Finance (1987-88); Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade (1988-95); Chief negociator for Iceland on the European Economic Area Agreement (EEA), 1989-93. Ambassador of Iceland to the United States and Mexico (1998-2002) and to Finland and the Baltic Countries (2002-2005). Visiting professor and scholar in residence at the University of Iceland and Bifröst University.
- Prolific writer on Economics, economic - and social policy, international affairs and education in various media. And frequent commentator on radio and TV. Political memoirs (Tilhugalíf – Honeymoon), published 2002.
- An honorary citizen of Vilnius, Lithuania and recipient of highest honours from the presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in recognition of political support for their restoration of independence.
